"Everybody has to be able to participate in a future that they want to live for. That's what technology can do." -Dean Kamen, Founder of FIRST

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an international non-profit organization that aims to transform the world today by intergrating math, science, engineering, and community outreach into the daily lives of young people. FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen (inventor of the Segway Human Transporter) who is president of FIRST Robotics. Kamen's determination to help young people discover the excitement and rewards of science and technology are the foundations of FIRST. Along with science and technology, FIRST programs also promote Gracious Professionalism, a term coined by Dr. Woodie Flowers, FIRST Executive Advisory Board Vice Chairman. With Gracious Professionalism, even when the game gets heated and crazy, competitors treat each other with respect and kindness. In the long run, Gracious Professionalism means one has benefited society with integrity and grace. Now with more than 45,000 volunteers working to contribute to FIRST's success, FIRST has been able to engage over 132,000 students worldwide. FIRST's innovative programs not only build science and technology skills and interests, but also self-confidence, leadership, and life skills.

FIRST's Mission

"Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership."
